Should Your Hunting Dog Wear A Camo Vest?

A customer recently had been invited on a goose hunt with some friends. While he had hunted upland with dogs most of his life, he had done very little waterfowling.

Here's his question:

While everyone was decked out in camouflage and cautious not to let incoming birds see their faces he noticed that the dogs (black labs) did not have any camo on at all. While they did get some geese he was wondering if the labs had been wearing camouflage vests would they have had more opportunities at some birds?

If you keep your dogs still and they sit until sent to retrieve I don't believe it would make much difference. I believe you are more trying to conceal movement with camoflage than you are trying to conceal an actual object. So if your dog is moving about it might help if he's still I don't think it would make much difference. Birds avoid movement more than they do colors. If you don't believe me get out there and experiment I think you'll find that you can be all kinds of colors if you don't move. It's a lot harder to see a camo guy move than a white one though.

We throw a camo tarp over our dogs when hunting feed fields. Probably a little more hassle than a vest but also more effective. Geese are very wary of preadators, or any thing else out of the ordinary, while in feed fields. A black lab stands out like a sore thumb in a stubble field.

Having a vest which would make the dog look like a goose would be very interesting to see. As the dog sits or moves around it would create a moving decoy. Thus not having to hide the dog anymore it would be used as an attraction for the incoming geese. The wolf inside the sheep suite... Just a thought.
